Our next DOWN to Earth meeting is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4th at 6:00pm in the lower level of the Hooper Building (36 Broad Street, Oshkosh). This month, DOWN to Earth invites parents and educators to a workshop designed to help you become more comfortable and confident addressing sexuality issues of children with disabilities across a variety of ages and stages. This session compares and contrasts sexual learning in the general population with sexual learning in individuals with intellectual disabilities. Designed to help
participants understand unique circumstances in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities that shape attitudes and behaviors around sexuality. Past attendees have said the information was beneficial to talking to their children with and without disabilities. The presenter of this workshop, Terri Couwenhoven, is the Clinic Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Clinic at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin (Milwaukee) and an AASECT (American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists) certified sex educator. She specializes in implementing programs and developing resources for people with intellectual disabilities, their families and the professionals who support them. She is the author of Teaching Children with Down syndrome About Their Bodies, Boundaries and Sexuality: A Guide for Parents and Professionals and A Girl’s Guide to Growing Up: Choice and Changes in the Tween Years. Her newest book, A Boy’s Guide to Growing Up: Choices and Changes During Puberty will be available next month. She has two daughters, her oldest daughter has Down syndrome. For more information about Terri, see her website www.terricouwenhoven.com. Childcare is offered at no charge for our meeting, BUT... we need to know BY MONDAY, Oct. 1 if you plan to bring your child/children. If no one requests childcare, CP of Mideast WI will not send a sitter and no childcare services will be provided. Our annual summer picnic is scheduled for Sunday, August 26th, 2012 in the large shelter of South Park in Oshkosh from 11AM-3PM. Please bring a dish to pass and a serving utensil. Meat, buns, beverages, and paper products will be provided. Please RSVP asap with Amy Schoening at [email protected]. We hope to see YOU at the picnic!
Our next DOWN to Earth meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 6:30 - 8PM in the lower level of the Hooper Building, 36 Broad Street in Oshkosh. As of now, we do not have a speaker lined up, as we thought we'd take some time to check in with each other and also take some time to discuss the resource library, which has been relocated to the Hooper Building. If there are any specific resources you would like to see added to our resource library, please feel free to bring that information along to this meeting.
We will not be having a typical December meeting. For this month (December), the Oberkrieser family has offered to host our annual Christmas party at their house on December 3rd from 6:00 PM until ??? To RSVP and get directions, please call the Arc office at 920-236-9230. Please plan to bring an appetizer or dessert to share.
Our Next Down to Earth Meeting is Wednesday, November 2, at 6:30 pm and we are doing something a little different: We will be having a Simply Fun Party @ Becket’s Restaurant (2 Jackson Street, Oshkosh). This is an opportunity to learn about & purchase educational family games just in time for the holidays. Attendees who place an order will be eligible to win the “hostess” benefits. For more information check out: www.erinoetjen.simplyfun.com.
This is a great chance to get some early Christmas shopping done! We are meeting at Becket’s so you can order your own drinks and snacks or dinner. (We are able to use the private dinning room free of charge as long as people are ordering, so please consider doing so, if possible). This is a good mom’s (& dad’s) night out! (Childcare is not available this evening – sorry.) Feel free to invite other friends, as well. Also attached is the press release that is being submitted to the Oshkosh Northwestern about the book that is being donated to all of the elementary schools. Hope to see you Wednesday!
